The Land Transportation Office (LTO) announced that they may start issuing the awaited five-year valid plastic license cards to drivers by August this year.
LTO chief Assistant Secretary Edgar Galvante said the agency is near completion regarding procedures for the procurement of seven million plastic cards that will be valid for five years.
LTO hopes to issue the notice of award to the most qualified manufacturer within this month.
Galvante said they are now working on including and speeding up the issuance of license cards to overseas Filipino workers.
“We are now processing those (companies) which have qualified in our bidding and we’re about to award…the license cards. We hope to start delivering the license cards by August,” Galvante said during the consultations with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and public transport stakeholders on the new franchising policy proposed by the government.
The procurement will address the backlog in the license cards for drivers who applied for or renewed cards since October 17 last year to those who are yet to avail theirs during the first few months of 2018.
Metro Manila will be among those first to receive their IDs when the LTO starts distributing this year.
Currently, there are around 200,000 five-year valid license cards backlog in the capital city alone.
