10,000 Filipinos might face deportation as US ends amnesty

An estimated number of 10,000 Filipinos living in the United States might face deportation as US President Donald Trump plans to dismantle a program that allows undocumented immigrant children to stay in their country.

Trump recently announced that his administration will formally dismantle the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), the program that protects about 800,000 young immigrants from being deported to their home country.

The US president gave the US Congress six months to formulate a law preventing the impending deportation of the immigrants covered by DACA.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano said the Philippine government will assist the affected Filipinos of this recent move by the Trump administration.

“We will authorize, with certain limitations, the use of the Assistance to Nationals Fund and the Legal Assistance Fund to assist immigration-related cases such as those arising from the decision of President Trump to revoke the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals or DACA,” The Philippine Star has quoted him.

He also urged the Filipino community in the US to stay hopeful and support the passage of new laws that would help them amidst the policy change.
