Former Michelin star chef says women too emotional to be in the kitchen

DUBAI: former Michelin star chef, 57-year-old Marco Pierre White has apparently stirred the hornets’ nest, suggesting that women can’t handle the job right in the kitchen.

“The real positive with men is that men can absorb pressure better, that’s the main difference, because they are not as emotional and they don’t take things personally,” various major media organizations, including The Guardian and The Independent quoted White as telling the Irish Independent in an interview.

“Look at the size of some of the pans you are carrying. Can you imagine you’re a lady in the kitchen and saying: ‘Will you carry that pan for me?’” he was further quoted as saying.

From female restaurateurs to respected industry leaders, White’s remarks elicited a backlash of sarcasm, among them Asma Khan, the founder of the all-female, London Indian restaurant, Darjeeling Express, who said she was disappointed by the comments.

“Like a three-day-old fish, [these comments] reek of patriarchy, and there is no place in the kitchen for rotting fish or chefs with these attitudes,” The Guardian quoted her as telling Big Hospitality.
