Pinoy coconut to be exported to US

Manila, Philippines: The Philippines is gearing up for its first-ever export of young coconuts to the United States, a deal that was recently sealed between the two countries.

The Philippines hopes to beat Thailand in the coconut market in the U.S. Target date of export is July.

“The Philippines is looking forward to penetrate the US market with a bigger volume and more attractive price points,” the Philippine Coconut Authority said.

The Agriculture Department said it is ready to help farmers export young coconuts to the U.S.

“The US market for green coconuts and other high value coconut products is now dominated by Thailand, which only has a total of 216,000-hectares planted to coconut compared to the Philippines 3.5-million hectares,” the Agriculture Department said.

The department also said it is willing to give financial assistance to those who may need extra capital to meet the young cocounuts demand.
