After the opening of Mactan-Cebu International Airport in June, passengers were quick to take photos of the first resort-themed airport in the country.
Terminal 2 of the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) which has been dubbed as the “World’s Friendliest Resort Airport”, aims to lessen congestion of passengers and showcase Filipino creativity, ingenuity, and hospitality through its architectural designs inspired by Cebu’s rich culture and heritage.
Upon arrival, tourists and passengers will catch a glimpse of the Cebuano culture through the terminal’s design which seeks to convey the residents’ warm welcome.
The airport also has waiting areas for passengers where they can eat or read a book or newspaper in silence.
The structure of the 65,000-sqm terminal was built from arched beams made of glulam wood instead of traditional steel.
Some walls indoors, meanwhile, are covered in moss to purify the air inside the airport.
A Duty Free store is also available inside the airport where passengers can buy pasalubong for their friends in Manila or overseas.
The terminal is expected to boost the airport’s current passenger capacity to 12.5 million from 4.5 million, within MCIA’s goal of 11.2 million passenger traffic this year.
