American Idol is the competition in the United States that turned on the spotlight for Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson, and Carrie Underwood, among others.
Some notable Filipino contestants who also competed on the show include Jasmine Trias and Jessica Sanchez.
The winner of the latest season of American Idol has recently been hailed: 20-year-old singer Maddie Poppe from Iowa.
Hours before she bagged the title, Poppe sent a few messages of gratitude to her fans, including Filipino actor Marlo Mortel and the latter’s mother, who is suffering from stage 4 cancer.
Mortel posted the video of Poppe’s message to him on his Instagram account with the caption, “American Idol winner @maddiepoppe sent me this before she won @americanidol today! She’s not just an amazing singer but also an amazing person inside and out. Congratulations and God bless you on your journey!”
“This message is for Marlo’s mom, and I’m in my pajamas and look like trash but I just want to say I know you’re going through a rough time right now and so your words mean a lot to me. And I really appreciate them, thank you,” the American Idol winner said in the video.
Mortel rose to prominence in Philippine show business after getting paired with Janella Salvador in the television series “Be Careful with My Heart” and “Oh My G!”.
