Filipino models have graced global catwalks before, but this Filipina takes it one step further in New York Fashion Week in the hopes of empowering women of all shapes and sizes all over the world.
Kat Gumabao is no stranger to international runways. In 2016, Gumabao walked at the Melbourne Fashion Week Plus, the first plus-size fashion show in the city.
Now she can add New York Fashion week to her list of accomplishments as she modeled for American plus-size clothing brand Torrid on Wednesday, September 13.
Torrid Fashion offers stylish clothing and accessories for plus-size women whose sizes range from large (L) to 4X.
Gumabao landed the spot in the clothing brand’s line-up of models after competing in the brand’s model search.
“It’s time to put the Philippines on the map when it comes to plus size fashion. World, I’m coming for you,” she said in a post on social media.
The model said she is grateful for the opportunity to promote body positivity and self-love.
“ Torrid Fashion, thank you for choosing me to be part of the Torrid Model Top 10. It was an honor to be included in such a selection that truly embraces diversity. Thank you for empowering women around the world,” she captioned a photo on Instagram.
She is the sister of actor Marco Gumabao and volleyball player Michelle Gumabao.
Other Filipinos graced the stylish event. Asia’s Next Top Model’s Maureen Wroblewitz, together with celebrity makeup artist Jigs Mayuga and beauty and fashion vlogger Kryz Uy, hosted a video blog giving viewers backstage access to NY Fashion Week.
