Muslims must refrain from eating crocodile meat because it is prohibited in the religion, according to a senior Saudi Muslim scholar.
“Crocodiles are amphibian animals which can live on land and in the sea…eating their meat is haram (prohibited) in Islam,” said Dr Saad Al-Khathlan, a member of the Gulf Kingdom’s seven-man Supreme Scholars Authority.
Newspapers said Khathlan made the remark after watching a video showing Saudi young men eating a crocodile while on a trip to South Africa.
He said Muslim scholars have differed on whether crocodile meat is permitted, adding that most scholars agree it is prohibited.
