PH hauls 14 gold medals on Day 2 of SEA Games 2019

Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) 2019 host the Philippines hauled another 14 gold medals today, taking the lead in the medal standing with 37 golds on the second day of the biennial regional sports event.

Arnis, Philippine’s national martial arts, sizzled the day’s Philippine medal haul. Five team members gobbled up the gold tally today, increasing their haul to 12 from the previous five golds they earned yesterday.

The arnis team’s performance eclipsed the dancesport team’s 10 golds yesterday.

Olympic silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz also won the gold medal — her first SEA Games gold — after topping the women’s weightlifting 55kg -division.

Diaz lifted a total of 211 kg — 91 kg in the snatch and 120 in the clean to jerk, to edge out Vietnam and Indonesian contenders.

Gilas’ Pilipinas men’s team dominated the 3×3 basketball competition, winning all eight of their matches. Filipino-American Moala Tautuaa’s two-pointer sealed the deal with 2:25 left on the close during a close match against Indonesia.

Aside from Tautuaa, other members of Gilas Pilipinas have American lineages too — Jason Perkins, Chris Newsome and CJ Perez.

Gilas’ women counterpart also won the gold medal in the 3×3 competition against Thailand in an overtime.

Day 2 of the 30th SEA Games ended with host country Philippines earning 66 medals — 37 golds, 19 silvers and 10 bronzes.

Second in the medal standing is Vietnam with 46 medals — 10 gold, 20 silver and 16 bronze.

Malaysia ties with Vietnam on gold medal tally at 10, but lags behind in silver and bronze with 2 and 7 respectively.
