AI systems to help speed up criminal case follow ups in Abu Dhabi

The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department has developed a new smart program for speedy trials of criminal cases.

The new program has been developed to follow up cases in Abu Dhabi criminal courts using machine learning, authorities said.

The process involves use of artificial intelligence to increase the speed of adjudication of criminal cases with the department updating the program to enable electronic judgments in criminal cases that have been settled by conciliation or waiver, and cases affected by the statute of limitations.

Counselor Youssef Saeed Al Abri, Undersecretary of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, said that they are employing Artificial Intelligence techniques to follow up on the work of the criminal courts.

This aligns with the digital transformation of judicial and legal services as part of the application of the remote litigation system and implementation of the strategic plan of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department 2021-2023 and the programme focuses on plans and projects on providing services comparable to the best worldwide to provide a distinguished experience for court users.

The use of machine learning in the criminal courts is seen to facilitate the immediate follow-up of all the work of the judicial divisions as the programme offers accurate statistics of the completed cases. The authorities said that this is to take urgent steps to expedite cases and adjudicate them in accordance with the procedures established by law.

The smart program also allows the possibility of describing the judgement, “whether in presence or in absentia in electronic form.”

Authorities said that the work is underway to update the system to accommodate many procedures in criminal cases.
