Resort turns swimming pool into fish pond due to COVID-19 pandemic

A luxury resort in Kumarakom, India has decided to convert its swimming pool into a fish pond to cope with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The 150-meter pool of the resort, which is billed as the largest in Kumarakom, used to be full by European tourists, but now it is home to 16,000 fingerlings of pearl spot fish, reported The Times of India.

The resort shut down in March due to the economic impact of the virus and since only few hotels could operate when a nationwide lockdown was imposed.

“We have had zero revenues, so in June, we put around 16,000 two-month-old pearl spot fish in the pool,” Aveda’s general manager Jyotish Surendran told AFP.

The fish which takes months to reach its full size is a popular ingredient in Indian delicacies.

“We plan to harvest by November and will export to the Middle East,” the owner said.

The fish pond’s soon-to-be-revenue could not cover the losses, but the owner prefers it rather than entirely closing down the pool business.
