Tribal leader wins mayoralty race in Palawan

Rizal, Palawan— For the first time in the history of Palawan, a pure-blooded member of the Pala’wan tribe won the mayoral race in the town of Rizal.

Otol Odi won the municipality’s top post with 8,575 votes.

“Municipality of Rizal, Palawan elected its first native Pal’awan Mayor, Uncle Otol Odi. Mabuhay ang bayan ng Rizal! Sama-sama para pagtataguyod ng isang Maunlad na Bayan!” Mackie Baluyot, Odi’s nephew said in a facebook post.

In an interview Odi’s son Adonis said his father is grateful for the trust and opportunity to serve indigenous people.

Odi served as barangay chairman for 20 years. Although he lacked manpower and political capital for the election, he knew that his experience as a barangay worker would help him win.

Odi said that even though he had only finished elementary, his knowledge on laws will help him be effective on his post.

The newly elected mayor says he will focus on land protection for indigenous people.
