Sixteen-year-old singer from Cebu Janine Berdin was hailed the grand winner of It’s Showtime’s “Tawag ng Tanghalan Season 2” during its grand finals which took place on June 2 at the Aliw Theater.
Viewers of the ABS-CBN noontime show all over the world tuned in to watch the trending competition that showcased world-class Filipino talent.
Even though she was the youngest among the contestants, Berdin emerged as the winner of the competition after she garnered a total average score of 96.11% from the combined scores given by the judges, and text/online voters.
Steven Pasyu from California, USA came in third place with a score of 61.80%, while Ato Arman from Bukidnon was the runner-up, who garnered 74.27% of total votes.
As part of her victory, Berdin won a vacation package from 2GO, a musical gadget package from JB Music, a negosyo package from Siomai House, television sets from HKTV, a management contract, a house and lot from Camella, and a trophy designed by Filipino visual artist Toym Imao, reported ABS-CBN.
With her distinctive vocals and powerful performances, Berdin was not only a crowd favorite, but she was also clearly a front-runner during the entire competition.
Berdin started her Tawag ng Tanghalan journey as a daily contender with her explosive rendition of Eraserheads’ hit song “Magasin”.
Since then, she has battled her way to the top by showing impressive vocal skills and impeccable star quality.
Berdin created online buzz and became a trending topic during the semifinals of the competition. Some of her iconic moments was when she sang Lady Gaga’s “Edge of Glory”, Demi Lovato’s “Skyscraper”, Kamikazee’s “Narda”, and of course, her talked-about rendition of Yano’s “Banal na Aso, Santong Kabayo”.
Berdin continued to impress the judges and fans during her journey in the contest which earned her a spot in the grand finals.
During Tawag ng Tanghalan: Ang Huling Tapatan, one of her most memorable performances was when she sang an Eraserheads classic: “With a Smile”.
Berdin definitely gave it her all when she belted out Sampaguita’s “Nosi Balasi” and a medley of Bamboo’s hit songs.
As of press time, Berdin’s cover of Bamboo’s songs is the second trending video on YouTube Philippines after it gained more than 2.5 million views in less than 24 hours.
With her consistent performances and the amount of talent Berdin has poured out on the competition, there is no question as to why she was able to bag the title of this year’s Tawag ng Tanghalan.
