The colloquial wisdom goes, and some used to believe that “long-distance relationships neither succeed nor work”. But love may be stronger than you think as proven by the love story of a Filipino couple who despite having met only through Facebook, and being 4,900 miles away from each other for years, took their vows as husband and wife.
Kirmak Futalan, a computer technician married overseas Filipino worker based in Jeddah Angela Garcia. Their civil wedding took place last August 22 in a kasalang bayan at Ynares Center Compound in Antipolo.
Aside from the strains of being in a long-distance relationship, netizens lauded Futulan for accepting Garcia’s past and understanding that he isn’t alone in her life—because she’s a single parent to her two kids.

In fact, while the OFW was in Jeddah, Futulan used to visit and take care of her children, too.
“Silang mag-iina yung inspirasyon ko, masaya akong matawag na “PAPA”.
“Hindi man ako yung totoong tatay nila, tunay naman yung pag-aalaga ko at pagmamahal sa kanila,” commented Futulan on a Facebook post.
He also narrated that even then, he would tell her Garcia’s father that he couldn’t wait to walk her down the aisle on his arms.
He made good of his promise, ending his Facebook post by sharing that, “No one should be afraid to love a single mom”.
Long-distance relationship is now a trend that reflects the new realities of tough economic times, especially in the Philippines, where couples choose to leave their partners behind to seek better opportunities abroad.
But being apart from each other could also bring two hearts closer by always keeping in touch.
