Saudi newspapers on Thursday published a film showing Muslim pilgrims going for their annual Hajj in Makkah nearly 84 years ago.
The film showed old cars crossing Makkah’s famous gate that time as well as pilgrims on a camelback or walking.
The pilgrims included those from Saudi Arabia and other countries, as the Gulf Kingdom had no airports and only a few asphalted roads.
Oil had just been discovered in Saudi Arabia, which was under British mandate during that period. Hajj expeditions from other Arab countries to Saudi Arabia used to take months, and many pilgrims had died of thirst or killed by bandits.
