USA retains World Cup title

LYON, France – With a 2-0 score against the Netherlands, the United States has retained the women’s World Cup in what has been a cliffhanger game that opened doors for the ladies to yet again visit the White House.

According to a report from the French international news service, Agence France Presse (AFP), Megan Rapinoe was star player as she “struck home from 12 yards to put the USA ahead just after the hour mark.”

The victory underlined the USA’s status as the dominant force in international women’s football as they claimed the World Cup for the fourth time in 8 editions.

“I don’t even have words, it’s crazy right now. Even just getting to another final, it’s so difficult,” AFP quoted Rapinoe as saying. “Hopefully we will continue to reign strong for a number of years.”

Rapinoe received the Golden Ball for best player ahead of England’s Lucy Bronze and Lavelle, while also winning the Golden Boot as her 6 goals came from fewer minutes on the field than teammate Alex Morgan or England’s Ellen White, said the AFP report.

Team USA was already the first team to appear in 3 consecutive finals as well as the only non-European team to make it to the quarterfinals.
