Traffic violators in Abu Dhabi will have to pay higher fines starting July 1.
Motorists not wearing seatbelts will have a Dh400 fine and four traffic points.
Drivers who ignore traffic lights will be fined Dh1,000, given 12 penalty points and their vehicles impounded for one month.
Children are also protected by the amended Federal Traffic Law No. 21 of 1995 as seating a child under the age of 10 in the passenger seat will result in a Dh400 fine for the driver.
Business drivers such as Uber will be fined Dh3,000 and receive 24 traffic points when they are caught picking up passengers without a permit.
Brigadier General Ali Khalfan Al Dhaheri, Director of Central Operations Sector at Abu Dhabi Police General Command, urged drivers to obey the new rules and regulations to make UAE roads safer.
“The amendments in the executive regulations and the rules of traffic control procedures are in the interest of road users,” the director said as quoted by Khaleej Times.
