Sharjah plans a unified ‘entry card’ for car servicing

Sharjah: In an attempt to protect the rights of customers and reduce disputes between customers and garage staff, Sharjah is set to make a unified ‘entry card’ mandatory in car maintenance workshops across the emirate.

The Sharjah Economic Development Department (SEDD) on Mondayannounced that the unified entry card will be made mandatory in vehicle maintenance workshops by the end of the year. SEDD said it will also conduct awareness programmes for the implementation of the new card system, reported Gulf News.

The card ensures consumer rights upon delivery and receipt of vehicle and the commitment of carrying out the agreed maintenance, the department reportedly said.

Two copies of the card must be kept, one for the consumer and the other for the workshop. Consumers will be given the card when he or she leaves the car in the workshop for repairs.

The entry card will reportedly include all vehicle data as well as its internal and external condition, the required repair, in addition to the estimated initial prices, thus not leaving any room for verbal agreements or misunderstanding between the two parties.

Not keeping the data of vehicle repairs through this card will be a violation of the SEDD regulations, the department added.

Salem Al Suwaidi, deputy director of Commercial Control and Protection Department at SEDD, reportedly said that the initiative will ensure consumer rights upon delivery and receipt of the car in good condition from the workshop, similar to what agencies adopt, and guarantee the commitment of applying the agreed maintenance procedures, which will lead to the reduction of disputes that SEDD receives.

The initiative aims at regulating the market and protect consumers from exploitation, the Dubai-based news portal quoted Sultan Abdullah Bin Hadda Al Suwaidi, SEDD chairman, as saying.
