Aksyon Demokratiko standard bearer Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso on Friday vowed to reduce the rice consumption in the Philippines to minimize health issues, particularly diabetes.

He said that if he was elected President, he would encourage Filipinos to shift to the dietary habits of Koreans or Japanese and consume more vegetables.

The presidential aspirant said that he would make vegetables affordable to more Filipinos and invest in farming technology and would also back intercropping and diversification of crops in farmlands.

Presidential aspirant during his dialogue with agriculture stakeholders said, “Nasa 130 kilos per capita ang konsumo ng Pilipino sa bigas. Sa Japan, sa Korea nasa mga 50 [kilos] lang. Sa kanila kapag kakain ng kanin konti lang kasi maraming gulay. Tayo baliktad,” he said.

“Dahil mahal ang ulam, mahal din ang gulay kaya gagawin ng tao para mabusog siya, kanin ang titirahin niya,” he added.

Poor Filipinos usually consume more rice as vegetables are more expensive than the staple grain which however also leads to health issues like diabetes. (AW)
