The UAE has allowed five mobile applications for video conferencing to encourage more people to stay at home, while conducting business or work-at-home or studying at home to support government bid to stop or slow down the spread of the coronavirus.
The UAE’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority posted on its website that the ban on video conferencing is now lifted on the following apps:
* Microsoft Teams
* Zoom
* Blackboard
* Skype for Business (Microsoft)
* Google Hangouts Meet
“In response to a number of media inquiries, in the context of the emergency procedures taken as a response to the emerging conditions, and as part of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority’s efforts to support distance learning and working from home, TRA, in coordination with the UAE telecom operators (Etisalat & du), announced the availability of a set of applications, exceptionally and until further notice,” the TRA said in a statement.

For several years, most Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services that offer free voice and video calls via the internet, were banned in the UAE. The curbs have long been a grievance for expatriates, representing 85 percent of the Gulf state population, who want to keep in touch with family and friends back home and work remotely.
Previously, the only apps allowed for video call are Botim, Videolink.me, and C’me.
