LOOK: Biodegradable straws from café in Siargao goes viral

The ingenuity of Filipinos has once again gone viral on social media as a café in the Philippines showed that they are now using new biodegradable straws made out of coconut leaves!

“I got this idea when we visited Correigidor and I’m very impressed. ?????? LUKAY straw is easy to make and decomposable. I hope other restaurants will also be inspired to use this brilliant idea. ??,” said the admin behind the page.

The straws used by the Café Editha based in Dapa, Surigao del Norte were called ‘lukay’ – a local term for the palm leaves.

“We bought fresh buko and they just cut lukay, then made it into straws. So we asked them to teach us [because] we were very impressed with the idea,” Tiu added.
