Former Miss Universe says trans women ‘should have their own pageant’

Many beauty pageant enthusiasts are still weighing in on the highly-debated results of the recently concluded Miss Spain 2018 beauty pageant, wherein a transgender contestant was crowned as the winner.

On June 29, 25-year-old Angela Ponce bagged the Miss Spain 2018 crown making her the first trans woman to win the title.

Her victory will enable her to represent Spain in Miss Universe wherein she will be the first ever trans woman to compete for the highly coveted crown.

Last week, Miss Universe Philippines 2018 Catriona Gray, who will be representing the Philippines in the said pageant, said in an interview with ABS-CBN that she has no problems competing with a transgender contestant.

However, Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler from Venezuela does not share the same sentiments as Gray.

In one of her previous interviews, Isler said that candidates who were born male should have their own pageants.

“They should have their own pageant. I think and they can realize that this pageant (Miss Universe) was made for women,” she said.

She said that trans women, such as Ponce, “have the opportunity, but they have to compete with the same team.”

Nevertheless, the Venezuelan beauty queen said that the Miss Universe Organization still holds the decision whether to allow trans woman to compete or not.

“They have the opportunity to compete. It’s not my decision, but I’d like to give the power to (the Organization) but they have the opportunity to compete as a human being,” she added.

Miss Universe 2018 has yet to announce the final date and venue this year, but it is expected to take place in November either in Macau, South Korea, or Vietnam.
