In response to the rising prices of goods amid the Christmas season in the Philippines, some overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) opt to send grocery items through balikbayan boxes.
In an article written by Mye Mulitapang for ABS-CBN Europe, Joey Bernal, an OFW in Milan, said that it is more practical to buy grocery items there and then send them to their families in the Philippines since prices are cheaper there. Bernal filled his balikbayan box with rice, cooking oil, canned goods, and other items for everyday consumption.
“Dito, mura lalo na pag nag-sale. Mura lang ang bilihin. May kalidad, may pangalan,” Bernal told ABS-CBN News.
“Kasi sa atin masyado nang mahal ang mga bilihin lalo na at papalapit na ang Pasko kaya paunti-unti nag-iipon na ng mga ipapadala sa Pilipinas,” he added.
Inflation rate further rose to 6.7 percent for the month of September, higher than the 6.4 percent inflation rate reported in August.
With the Christmas season just around the corner, rising prices mean higher cost of grocery items for Noche Buena for Filipino families.
Despite this, inflation rate is seen to begin to ease next month thus stabilizing prices of goods.
