2016 was a great year for The Filipino Times Educator of the Year awardee, Dr. Rommel Sergio.
His TFT recognition was followed by the Huwarang OFW-People’s Choice Award. Months later, he was adjudged as one of the Top 50 Global Educators, an annual awards held in the UK.
Before the year ended, Sergio was chosen as an Outstanding OFW by President Rodrigo Duterte. He was the sole OFW awardee from the UAE.
“My TFT award is a laurel that symbolizes the kind of passion I have in my field – teaching. This laurel affirms the quality of engagement I have not just in my current work but also based on the community extension programs I facilitate. This will not happen without the people in the community who dedicated themselves to make things happen,” said Sergion.
‘To this year’s TFT Awards nominees, Sergio has this message: ‘Winning the award has taught me so much about selflessness – that when you give your time, expertise, and support without asking anything in return, the more the value of giving is felt’’
When he is not busy with his academic duties, Sergio volunteers his service to many overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in the UAE, as a counseling psychologist. One of his most recent community engagement was a psycho-social training for selected employees of the Philippine General Consulate which enabled them to be competent counselors for distressed OFWs.
In the Philippines, Sergio runs a scholarship program for impoverished students.
To this year’s TFT Awards nominees, Sergio has this message: “Winning the award has taught me so much about selflessness – that when you give your time, expertise, and support without asking anything in return, the more the value of giving is felt.”
Sergio holds two doctorate degrees and one post-doctoral education. He earned his PhD in Human Resource Management at University of Liverpool in UK with High Distinction in 2015. (Gelin Castro)
