President Rodgrigo Duterte asked for forgiveness from the Marawi evacuees for placing Mindanao under martial law.
“I would like to say to the Maranao people that I am very, very, very sorry na nangyari ito sa atin. Sana sa madaling panahon, you will find the heart to forgive my soldiers, ang gobyerno, pati ako for declaring martial law,” the President said while visiting the displaced families taking shelter in Iligan City on Tuesday.
The president argued however that he was forced to declare martial law because of the growing presence of rebellion and violence by Islamic militants in Marawi City.
The apology came with the promise of rehabilitating the city. Duterte said he is allocating P20 billion for the rehabilitation.
Mindanao was placed under martial law last month in response to the attack and takeover of Marawi by Maute militants.
