Filipino swimmers bag 11 golds in Tokyo tilt

MANILA: Philippine Swimming League (PSL) has won 11 gold medals at the 2016 Buccaneer Invitational Swimming Championship over the weekend at the St. Mary’s International School swimming pool in Tokyo, Japan.

Immaculate Heart of Mary College-Paranaque Micaela Jasmine Mojdeh bagged three gold medals and set two records in the girls’ 9-10 50-m butterfly (33.07) and girls’ 9-10 200-m individual medley to lead the country’s campaign, reported ABS-CBN News.

She also reportedly towed the girls’ 9-10 team to a gold medal in the 200-m freestyle relay in 2:21.49, that smashed the 10-year-old mark of 2:23.31 established by the Buccaneers-Japan team in 2006. The other members are Triza Tabamo, Shaine Sanchez and Julyiana Calibjo.

Hope Christian School-Legazpi’s Trump Christian Luistro also shared the spotlight as he won three golds in the boys’ 8-under 25-m freestyle (17.31), 50-m breaststroke (47.66) and 25-m butterfly (19.42), while Rio Lorenzo Malapitan of Divine Word College-Calapan won the boys’ 11-12 100-m breaststroke (1:18.26) and 50-m butterfly (30.15), the report said.

The other gold medalists were Weisenheimer Academy’s Marc Bryan Dula (boys’ 9-10 50-m butterfly, 35.49), Diane Fabicon (girls’ 15-18 200-m backstroke, 3:10.33) and the girls’ 13-14 400-m freestyle relay team of Felice Alexis Reyes, Paula Carmela Cusing, Kyla Soguilon and Shyne Nicole Villagomeza (5:01.90).

Besides the gold medals, the Filipino tankers also got 11 silvers and eight bronzes in the tournament participated in by more than 600 tankers.

“The field is really tough but we’re happy that our swimmers are doing well in their respective events. We’re not yet done and the kids are still in fighting mode,” PSL president Susan Papa reportedly said.

The final day of the competition will be held Monday. So far, the Philippines is at the No. 3 spot in the team standings with 316 points, while host Japan is leading the pack with 754 points followed by the British team with 351 points, reported ABS-CBN News.
