Filipino netizens around the world were caught by surprise after a video of a sprinting ostrich in the Philippines spread on their newsfeeds, on August 4.
Motorists Dino Rivera and Mark Lawrence Umpig immediately took the opportunity to capture both ostriches on video as the two flightless wild birds attempted to flee from their village at Quezon City.
Security personnel from the Mapayapa Village 3 in Quezon City stated that both ostriches were owned by a resident from an adjacent village and had escaped from their enclosure.
Philippine laws state that it is legal to own ostriches as pets provided that the owner secures a certificate of wildlife registration (CWR) from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
Meanwhile, individuals who plan to raise ostriches for farming purposes can apply for the necessary permits through the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI).
As of posting time, both videos already have a cumulative 1.8 million views, with 60,000 reactions and comments, and 50,000 shares on Facebook.
