Former OFW arrested for alleged ‘rent-sangla’ scam

A former overseas Filipino worker (OFW) was arrested for using false identity for scamming her clients in a “rent-sangla” modus operandi.

Alice Atienza, who goes by the name “Evangeline Baluyot,” was nabbed by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) operatives at her home in Guagua, Pampanga through the help of social media.

One of Atienza’s alleged victims said the former OFW swindled his money and two carsone of which had been recovered by the victim from another person, but he had to buy it for P150,000.

Atienza had been involved in other swindling cases in the past.

In her defense, Atienza named a certain Rodel Tayag as the man behind the scam.

Atienza will be charged with carnapping and using false identity.

The ‘rent-sangla’ modus operandi promises unsuspecting car owners to rent their cars. The cars will then be sold to other people.

According to Philippine National Police Highway Patrol Group’s data, half of the 1,800 cars subjected to this ploy had already been recovered.
