Winter officially starts today, cooler temperatures expected in the UAE

At exactly 8:19 a.m. today, it will officially be winter in the UAE.

Expect the drop in temperature with the minimum at 8C and maximum at 28C, according to the 5-day weather bulletin of the National Center of Meteorology (NCM).

The lowest temperature recorded today was at 6.1C in Raknah at 7a.m.

There will also be fog formation westwards today until Monday.

It will be partly cloudy on Tuesday.

Earlier today, NCM issued a rough sea advisory due to northwesterly and northeasterly winds.

Earlier this week, Sharjah-based astronomer and meteorologist Ebrahim Al Jarwan was quoted in an interview by Gulf News that today, the Earth will also experience the shortest day and the longest of night.

This is called the winter solstice which happens when the path of the Sun in the sky is farthest south in the Northern Hemisphere (December 21 or 22) and farthest north in the Southern Hemisphere (June 20 or 21).
