Former human trafficking victim turned Filipina community leader recognized as ‘Champion of Migration’

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has recently recognized Warpeace Arnold, a Filipina community leader in the UAE, as a recipient of their ‘Champion of Migration’ award in a ceremony held at the Department of Foreign Affairs in Pasay City last December 16.

Philippine Ambassador to the UAE, H.E. Ambassador Hjayceelyn Quintana praised Arnold’s efforts as a ‘dynamic Filipino community leader’ whose efforts assist the Embassy in providing assistance to Filipinos in the country.

“Ms. Arnold has been a valuable partner of the Philippine Embassy in promoting the welfare of Filipinos in the UAE. This recognition by IOM of her contributions to the work of protecting the welfare of overseas Filipinos should serve as an inspiration for everyone that while the challenges may seem insurmountable, we should all do our part especially for those vulnerable to the vagaries of migration,” said Quintana in an official statement.

The Leyte native has been in the UAE for over 33 years after arriving in the country in 1986. A former victim of illegal recruitment herself during her first few years, she understands the plight of Filipino workers and has since strived hard to rise through the ranks to find better employment as she’s now a Ship Manager.

“I fell prey to criminals and illegal recruiters earlier in the days. Fortunately, it was the goodwill and harmonious relationship with my employer that enabled me to endure the adversities,” shares Arnold

Through the years she has used her experience, passion and dedication to assist fellow Filipinos as she launched a group called United OFWs – UAE. As its President, she now promotes and advocates for programs that she believes will help OFWs including the passage of the Department of Filipinos Overseas.

Arnold received the plaque from IOM Chief of Mission in the Philippines Kristin Dadey and DFA Undersecretary for Administration J. Eduardo M. Malaya.

“With determination and the will to keep learning, she was able to prove herself and build great relationships with her employer, helping her endure adversities and rise above them,” wrote the IOM in a message to Arnold.

Arnold was one of the four awardees during the ceremonies that includes Holy Spirit Missionary Sister Rosa Angelica Libron, CIFAL Philippines Director Dr. Edna Estifania Co, and Rappler journalist Ana Santos.
