Court orders return of Zaldy Ampatuan to jail

The Quezon City Trial Court has ordered that Zaldy Ampatuan be returned to his detention cell in Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig.

In a December 16 order, Judge Jocelyn Solis-Reyes said “there is no longer any need” for Ampatuan, a primary defendant, to remain in the hospital because his rehabilitation procedures “can be done to him as an out-patient.”

Ampatuan had been in Makati Medical Center for 40 days after suffering a stroke in October.

The judge granted a motion by prosecutors that sought Ampatuan’s return to jail, GMA News reported.

The prosecution feared that his hospitalization might serve as an opportunity to escape.

Zaldy Ampatuan is one of the accused facing verdict in the massacre of 58 people in Ampatuan town, Maguindanao on November 23, 2009.

The judgement will be handed down on Thursday, December 19, at Camp Bagong Diwa.
