There’s now a road in the Philippines that’s made of recycled plastics.
San Miguel Corporation debuted the said “first recycled plastics road” in General Trias, Cavite.
According to a report by ABS-CBN News, the conglomerate used over 180,000 sachets and plastic bags for asphalt that was laid on a 1,500-square meter pilot test site.
San Miguel President Ramon Ang was quoted in the report in saying that the project was the company’s want to create a sustainable use for waste plastics so they don’t only end up in landfills, and rivers and oceans.
How does plastic waste help improve the quality of the road?
According to the company’s technology partner Dow, the plastic waste acts as a binder for the production of asphalt and can help make roads more durable.
The company’s independent lab testing done on its recycled plastics road asphalt showed that it even exceeded the standards of the Department of Public Works and Highways.
