A Filipina caregiver and her boyfriend both pleaded guilty on misdemeanor charges in relation to a Snapchat video showing them harrasing and taunting a 91-year old dementia patient.
Jaimie Montesa pleased guilty for an attempted unauthorized recording. She was also sentenced to one year supervision with 50 hours of community service.
Her boyfriend, on the other hand, Bryan Cortez also pleaded guilty. He received a sentence of 18 months supervision with 100 hours of community service.
Cortez and Montesa were fired from the nursing home and ordered to stay away from the patient who has since transferred to another facility.
In December 2018, a video clip circulated on Snapchat where the suspects were seen taunting 91 year-old Margaret Collins.
Cortez allegedly waved the gown at Collins while Montesa filmed the incident. The caption in the video reads,”Margaret hates gowns,” with 2 laughing emojis.
The Collins family sued the two and asked for $1 million in damages due to violations of the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act, negligence, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
