A Caloocan police officer was injured after he was shot by a fellow police officer early Sunday morning, September 17.
The victim was identified as SPO1 Romel Bautista, 42, of the Caloocan Police Station Investigation and Detective Management Bureau, Philippine Star reported.
According to police reports, SPO1 Bautista responded to the cry for help of Danny Sta. Maria, a customer at a nearby carinderia.
Sta. Maria, 64, was eating at a carinderia in Caloocan at 3:30 am when he reached for a toothpick in front of another customer, PO2 Paul John Dela Fuente of the Manila Police District.
PO2 Dela Fuente allegedly confronted Sta. Maria for his rude behavior, leading to a brawl between the two men.
Sta. Maria sought the help of SPO1 Bautista who was in the vicinity during the time.
Upon seeing the approaching policeman, PO2 Dela Fuente shot at the cop, hitting SPO1 Bautista on the leg while a jeepney driver, Ricardo Ramos, was hit by a stray bullet.
Northern Police District director Chief Superintendent Amando Clifton Empiso has ordered a manhunt for the suspect.
