Filipina saved from death row in Sabah

Sabah-based Filipina businesswoman Rubiah Lahani Abdul Rahman, who was initially sentenced to death for drug trafficking, received a lighter sentence from the High Court on August 29.

Rubiah was accused of trafficking after she was arrested with 56.43 grams of shabu at a fast food outlet in Karamunsing in May.

She was initially charged for drug trafficking, which carries the death penalty under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act.

But the court lowered her charge to drug possession after her counsel presented that she was used as a scapegoat by two other individuals who played a bigger role in the crime.

Rubiah said she has repented for her crime despite not doing it alone and said it was her fault for wanting to earn some money by involving herself in the shady business.

She is sentenced to five years in prison as per Section 39A(2) of the same act.

Rubiah, who is married to a local and has three children, has been staying in Sabah for 20 years.
