President Rodrigo Duterte threatens to expose his toughest and most vocal critic’s alleged hidden wealth in foreign bank accounts.
During a speech in Cagayan de Oro on Saturday, September 9, Duterte accused Senator Antonio Trillanes IV of having secret bank accounts overseas after photos of supposed bank transactions under the senator’s name circulated online.
“I’m coming up with Trillanes’ bank deposits which are all over. I’m giving you in a few days the number of deposits that he has with his bank accounts in Hong Kong, China, Australia and the US,” the president said.
Duterte added that Trillanes owned the accounts jointly with a Chinese businessman involved in a trucking business in Metro Manila.
The threat comes two days after the president’s son, Davao Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte, and son-in-law, Manases Carpio, faced the Senate probe and denied Trillanes’ accusations of their involvement in smuggling of illegal drugs into the country.
Trillanes on Monday, September 11, signed a waiver to allow the Office of the Ombudsman and the Anti-Money Laundering Council to look into his alleged secret bank accounts.
“I will sign and present the waiver to disprove the allegation against me.” Trillanes said.
“I will ask for a certification [from the foreign banks] that there is none and I will display it prominently. I will slap it on the face of Duterte,” he warned the president.
