Truck drivers in the Philippines endure long drives to perform their jobs of transporting goods from a point to another. Deadlines sometimes pressure them to drive restlessly. Thus, making them prone to vehicular accidents, which could endanger lives of many.
Such cases are not strange in the UAE.
Dubai Police considers truck accidents as a major issue in the emirate because in the first half of 2017 alone, crashes involving heavy vehicles claimed lives of 15 people, according to Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Director of Traffic Department in Dubai Police.
This is why Dubai Police and Road and Transport Authority initiated a campaign that seeks to augment road safety in the UAE by reaching out to heavy vehicle drivers.
The campaign educated 200 truck drivers on UAE’s new traffic law as well as some of the most crucial traffic violations, such as brake failures and absence of brake lights, lack of safety locks and worn tyres, reported Gulf News.
“The main aim of the campaign is to spread a culture of awareness on the traffic rules to truck drivers. This in return would help in reducing the number of accidents caused by heavy vehicles. It was important to introduce truck drivers to the new laws and regulations,” Gulf News quoted Al Mazroui as saying.
Colonel Essam Al Awar, director of Traffic Fines Collection and Traffic Services Department at Dubai Police, said the month-long campaign included handing out of flyers to truck drivers at rest stops.
