Filipino swimming sensation Jerard Jacinto failed to advance to the next round but still came up with something to celebrate after he shattered the 100-meter backstroke Philippine record during the 7th FINA World Juniors Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary Tuesday night.
The 18-year-old Jacinto timed 56.27 seconds to break the Philippine mark of 56.48 set by Jaden Christian Olson in the NCSA Summer Championships in the US early this month.
Olson’s record bested the previous Philippine record set by Ryan Papa in the Southeast Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia 22 years ago.
However, the record-breaking performance only placed Jacinto at 22nd overall that denied him of a semifinal ticket.
Jacinto will try to bounce back from the failed title bid when he competes in the Philippine Swimming Inc.’s National Championship scheduled on August 31 to September 3 at the New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac.
