London court declares Boris Becker bankrupt

Tennis great Boris Becker, who won a Wimbledon tennis championship three times, was declared bankrupt by a London bankruptcy court on Wednesday.

The court’s judge Christine Derrett, ruled that Becker couldn’t pay a two-year-old debt and rejected his lawyers’ plea to give the former tennis player 28 more days to raise the payment.

Becker was reportedly “surprised and disappointed” at private private bankers Arbuthnot Latham & Co for bringing the issue to the bankruptcy court.

He claimed he could pay the loan to the bank by remortgaging a property and getting the funds from a Spanish bank within a month’s time.

“The value of the asset in question far exceeds the debt owed to Arbuthnot Latham,” BBC quoted Becker as saying.

Becker retired from tennis in 1999 and currently works as a tennis commentator and coach.
