The Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) has introduced the ‘Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp,’ an initiative to acknowledge hotels adhering to DET’s 19 ‘Sustainability Requirements.’
In a tweet on Sunday, the Dubai Media Office said: “The initiative, launched in line with the UAE Year of Sustainability, is part of DET’s commitment to strengthening Dubai’s position as a leading sustainable tourism destination.”
“The ‘Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp’ will feature a three-tier scheme with categories ranging from Gold, Silver, and Bronze. Nominations for hotel establishments to obtain the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp will begin on 3 August 2023 and end on 31 August 2023,” it added.

In collaboration with Dubai’s hospitality sector, the new stamp aims to boost sustainability efforts and support the UAE’s NetZero 2050 initiative. The initiative, based on global best practices, will validate hotels’ dedication to sustainability through criteria like energy and water efficiency, waste management, and staff education.
Yousuf Lootah, Acting CEO of Corporate Strategy and Performance at DET, emphasized that the initiative aims to set a benchmark for environmental stewardship, promoting sustainable growth and encouraging businesses to adopt eco-friendly practices.
“We have carefully curated a set of high standard criteria that will reward hotels that go above and beyond in their sustainable practices. By recognising these exemplary establishments, we are encouraging others to follow suit and embrace sustainable initiatives that not only benefit their businesses but also contribute to the collective well-being of our city and the world at large,” Lootah said.
“Supported by Dubai’s vibrant hotel industry, this initiative is a strategic step towards achieving our goal of making Dubai a leading destination for global travellers seeking the ultimate sustainability experience,” he added.
As Dubai gears up to host the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) later this year, the launch of the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp showcases the industry’s determination to foster an eco-friendly sector while ensuring economic prosperity.
Moreover, DET’s sustainability strategy includes other innovative initiatives like the Carbon Calculator and Dubai Can, focusing on reducing single-use plastic water bottle consumption and promoting sustainability citywide.
