Filipino -ber months traditions that you can keep alive while in UAE

While many OFWs make the most out of the holiday season by traveling back to the Philippines and being with their families during the Christmas season, others simply choose to enjoy the winter weather in the United Arab Emirates.

If you will be spending your holidays in the UAE, you can keep the Pinoy Christmas spirit alive by following these traditions:

  1. Simbang Gabi

The St. Mary’s Church in Oud Metha is now all set for the upcoming Simbang Gabi which usually begins every December 16. They are currently training their auxiliary team and are inviting more individuals to serve during the busy season.

The nine-day series of dawn or evening masses is usually celebrated during the Advent season which is from 16-24th of December, which is in preparation for the Christmas Day. The devotional practice usually includes a novena.

  1. Put up your Christmas tree and create your own parol

Decorating your own space or unit will help you feel more at home. You can put on your creative hat and recycle your home items into a Parol. There are also D-I-Y Christmas tree ideas online that you can use as a guide on how you can turn everyday items such as plastic bottles into a tree.

  1. Organize your own version of salo-salo

Setting up a party with Pinoy-loved games and not to mention, handa will help keep the Filipino tradition of salo-salo alive. Togetherness is one of the cores of the spirit of the Christmas season. Which is why bringing your friends and family together here in UAE can bring you that home away from home.

  1. Incorporate Christmas carols in your parties

Let us admit it! Pinoy gatherings will not be complete without some karaoke or singing. May it be at home or during your office gatherings, you can compete your Christmas parties by giving your favorite song a go or enjoying a classic Jose Mari Chan Christmas carol.

  1. Practice gift giving

Another Filipino culture that you can practice while here abroad is bringing the spirit of giving to life. You can turn yourself into a secret Santa or generously share your blessings to friends and family by either sending them a balikbayan box or taking them into a shopping spree to enjoy the festive season sale offered by various stores and shopping malls across UAE.
