Two months after ‘Odette’ devastation, Siargao now open for tourists

Two months after the devastation left by Typhoon Odette in Siargao, Mayor Prosferina Coro of Del Carmen, Surigao del Norte said on Monday that the country’s surfing capital is reopening its doors for tourists.

Coro said in a radio interview that the airport and some resorts have resumed their operations.

“Yung iba nag-start na po mag-open. ‘Yung iba rin wala pa talaga, sirang-sira…Bukas na po ang tourism natin, unti-unti po,” she said.

Surigao Del Norte Representative Francisco Matugas II previously said that 99% of Siargao residents were affected by Odette.

Odette made its first landfall in the island last December 17.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reports that a total of 1,395,097 houses were damaged—1,031,063 partially and 364,034 totally damaged.
