VP Robredo still open to run for President in 2022

Vice President Leni Robredo is still planning to run for President in the 2022 elections.

Senator Ping Lacson said that Robredo has rejected the proposal to unite with other possible contenders.

“The gist of the discussion was unification, put up a common candidate if possible against the administration. I offered her a sure unification effort or formula,” Lacson said.

“She resisted. Hindi siya sold dun sa idea but it was a sure formula putting up at least between the two of us a common candidate. Unfortunately, she didn’t buy it. Definitely, she is open to running,” he added.

Robredo’s spokesperson Barry Gutierrez added that VP has not given up yet on her political plans.

“She has made this clear several times, and despite claims from some quarters to the contrary, her determination on this remains firm. Second, supporting anyone else for President is not yet being considered. The first option is still very clearly for VP Leni to run,” he said.

“At this point, the Vice President is still looking at a possible presidential run next year. But the first objective is to make sure that an opposition candidate wins. Therefore, step one is to unite everybody,” Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon said.

“If she becomes the most viable candidate, she will ask the others to come around and support her because the objective is to have a united front. So, the assessment that she has given up is totally wrong and baseless,” he added.

Former Senator Antonio Trillanes expresses his dismay over the talks that happened between Robredo and confirmed tandem of Lacson and Senate Sotto.

In a tweet, Trillanes reminded Robredo and the Liberal Party that Sotto was the one who pushed for the imprisonment of detained Senator Leila De Lima.

“VP Leni, I hope this is not true. Pero kung totoo ito, pasensya na po pero the Magdalo Group would not join you and LP kung mag give way kayo para kay Sen. Lacson. May I remind you also na si Sen. Lacson ay isa sa nagtulak sa unjust imprisonment of your partymate, Sen. De lima,” he said.
