UP exec quits post following backlash over his ‘death by community pantry’ remark

University of the Philippines Executive Vice President Dr. Teodoro Herbosa tendered his resignation from effective immediately due to personal reasons, the state university announced on Sunday.

UP President Danilo Concepcion accepted Herbosa’s resignation “expressing his regret from the fact that Herbosa had served the University with great dedication.”

“In your service as Executive Vice President, you have shown how vital this position can be to the governance of the University,” Concepcion said in a statement.

Herbosa, who served as UP’s Executive Vice President since 2017, was part of the UP COVID-19 Response Team which provided projections, analyses, and recommendations to aid the government’s decision-making regarding COVID-19.

This came a day after he received backlash over his “death by community pantry” tweet.

The former UP executive made the remark following the death of an elderly man who queued up in the community pantry organized by actress Angel Locsin on her birthday.

Herbosa issued an apology after the controversial tweet gained criticism on social media.

“I sincerely apologize for my tweet earlier today, tagging as ‘death by community pantry’ news of a senior citizen’s death at a community pantry of a celebrity. It may have sounded like a criticism but was ill-judged, when many are facing hardships & being helped by these kind hearted souls,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, Herbosa will retain his post as special adviser to the National Task Force Against COVID-19. (RA)
