LOOK: Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad sworn in as 16th Emir of Kuwait

Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah took oath before the National Assembly on Wednesday to become the 16th Emir of the state of Kuwait.

The Kuwait News Agency, KUNA, quoted Sheikh Nawaf as reading Article 60 of the Constitution, “I swear by Almighty Allah to respect the Constitution and the laws of the State, to defend the liberties, interests and properties of the people and to safeguard the independence and territorial integrity of the country.”

Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah has ascended to the throne as Kuwait’s ruling emir following the death of his brother Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah at the age of 91 on Monday, the government cabinet announced.

“According to the rules of the constitution… the cabinet names the Crown Prince, His Royal Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, the emir of the state of Kuwait,” Deputy Prime Minister Anas Khalid Al Saleh read the Cabinet statement in a televised address.

“We pray to the lord to engulf His Highness [Sheikh Nawaf] with his generous care and grant him good health and aid him and chart his steps on the path of righteousness,” he added.

Before this, Sheikh Nawaf has served in various cabinet positions since he started his public career in 1962. The most notable positions that handled were his posts as ministers of defense, the interior and social services.
The emir of Kuwait heads the state with power over all affairs in the country.
