Singer Sheryn Regis has come out as a lesbian.
The singer, dubbed by the local media as Crystal Voice of Asia, said she is grateful for the acceptance she has received from her ex-husband and child.
“Sabi ko sa kanya, ‘Tito Earl, I am a lesbian. I’m living a lie. Not just to you, not just to the family, a lie sa sarili ko rin,” Sheryn said in an interview with Ogie Diaz.
“Kasi dine-deny ko eh, di ko siya pinagbigyan, kaya siguro ako nagka-depression, nagkasakit ako, sinubok ako ng buhay. Kaya parang feeling ko, ‘Bakit hindi ko sabihin kay Tito Earl, Baka, bukas, wala na ako, di ko pa rin ma-fulfill yung gusto ko, na sabihin kung ano talaga ako,” she added.
Sheryn added that her relationship with Earl Echiverri was not traditional. She was also more focused on her career.
“I became selfish in a way na hindi ako naging asawa, pero naging nanay ako. Kailangan ma-divert attention ko dahil gusto kong madeny na ganito ako,” she said.
“‘Oh well, I knew it mommy, but it doesn’t make you less of a person, it doesn’t make you less of a mom,’” Sheryn said when she came out to her child named Sweety.
“‘Wag mo muna divorce si daddy,’ that’s what she asked. ‘I don’t want to be a child without a mom and a dad na magkasama,” Sheryn recalled.
Sheryn said that Echiverri and her child are supportive of her relationship with her girlfriend.
