Miss Universe Philippines 2020 Rabiya Mateo turned emotional as she apologized to some pageant fans immediately after the National Costume competition of the beauty pageant on May 14.

The country’s bet slayed her performance but still ended up saying sorry to Filipino fans who were asking why she did not wear the complete ensemble. Her costume was a creation of the late Filipino international designer Rocky Gathercole, who had once been based in the UAE.

Rabiya began her Instagram live video saying: “I just want to quickly clarify, I’m so sorry kung na disappoint man kayo sa akin but I know I did my best,” she said.

The full outfit ensemble reportedly weighs more than 20kg. Due to its weight, her team decided to prioritize the safety and ease of the Ilongga beauty queen while walking on the stage.

They advised her not to wear the golden sun headdress that was designed by Bulacan jewelry designer Manny Halasan.

While trying the headpiece on, Rabiya injured herself backstage. She explained this during her live Instagram video.

“I even cut my finger earlier, yung stockings ko puno na rin siya ng dugo, but I kept fighting,” she said.

Rabiya thanked those who continue to support her. She said that seeing her kababayans during the event gave a booster shot to her confidence.

“I felt really great. I felt so beautiful nakita ko yung cheer ng mga judges, yung sigawan ng mga Pilipino,” she said.

Rabiya said that the fight has just begun and she asked for prayers and support throughout the competition.

“This outfit is inspired by the Philippine flag. The blue represents royalty, red stands for the courage and strength for an independent woman and yellow, the color of sun and stars, symbolizes freedom to choose whoever you want to be,” the host said while Rabiya walked on the stage.
