‘Rest in Peace, Martin Charnin. The sun will come out, tomorrow, indeed’
Broadway superstar Lea Salonga tweeted this on the passing of Charnin, the man behind the hit classic ‘Annie’.
Charnin suffered from a heart attack.
His death was confirmed by his daughter, Sasha Charnin Morrison, in a Facebook post.
The 84-year-old director and lyricist is best known for conceiving, directing, and writing the lyrics for the hit Broadway musical ‘Annie.’
Salonga started her acting career as the lead child actress in Repertory Philippines‘ musical rendition “Annie”. Last year, “Annie” was shown again in various cities in the US with Lea playing as Grace Farrell.
Rest In Peace, Martin Charnin. The sun will come out tomorrow, indeed.

In her column at the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Salonga wrote that “one of the big thrills” during that 2018 summer production was having Charnin, as well as composer Charles Strouse, watch the show “and then hosting them backstage.”
Chanin started his career as an actor in the Broadway show ‘West Side Story’.
Charnin won the Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Director and Outstanding Lyrics, as well as the Tony Award for Best Original Score for Annie in 1976.
He also worked with big personalities like Dionne Warwick, Nancy Wilson and many others.
