The reunion of Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion on the TV ad for a fast food went viral when it came out, but the former revealed that she didn’t want to do the commercial initially.
In an interview with Rated K last March 4, the Megastar revealed the wanted to turn down the fast food’s offer because she and her ex-husband are not in good terms.
“Di ba, dapat nga magpe-pelikula kami two years ago pa hanggang last year, hindi na natuluy-tuloy, so sabi ko wala na siguro
“And then biglaang na-offer itong McDdonald’s sa amin na truthfully, ayokong gawin kasi hindi kami in good terms, e. Hindi kami nag-uusap,” she said.
Another thing that made Cuneta hesitant in doing the commercial was her uncertainty if the modern-day TV viewers would still accept their love team.
“Alam ko, medyo malaki yung excitement. Ang hindi ko sure, paano tatanggapin na 50s na kami?” she said.
Cuneta also said that she was able to shoot the commercial well with Concepcion even though there had been a conflict between them.
“Actually, hindi ko talaga alam ano nangyari. Hindi kami magkaaway na harapan, e. I didn’t know what to expect pero laging negative.
“Parang nakaka-nerbiyos na hindi ko alam kung tama ba tong tinanggap ko ‘to, ‘tapos biglang maya-maya pagpasok, sabi niya, ‘Hi!’
“‘Hi!’ gumanyan ako, ‘tapos meron siyang dalang fruit basket. Nag-thank you, gumanyan lang ako, ‘tapos, ‘Sige, I’ll see you later,'” she narrated on the interview.
The Megastar also said that when the cameras started rolling, she felt like she was taken back to the 80s during her shooting days with Concepcion.
“Diyos ko, Lord! The minute we were given instructions, para kaming nag-shooting kahapon lang. Balik agad sa dating gawi. We knew exactly what they wanted from the storyboard. At saka kasi may pagkatotoo yung, ‘Do you mind if I join you,’ na first time kayong mag-uusap.
“It was true. May ilangan, may awkwardness hanggang sa mamaya, relaxed na uli,” she said.
Cuneta and Concepcion first became on-screen partners for the movie “Dear Heart” in 1981. The former also revealed that she and Concepcion did not click immediately, but it did not take long before she got to know her co-star and eventually fell for him.
“Shooting kami, hindi kami nag-uusap.Hindi naman sa irita kung hindi di ako friendly at saka naiilang ako sa kanya.
“Pero pag may eksena kaming ganyan, mabait naman, he’s very down-to-earth.
“Noong bandang patapos, may mga phone calls na. Noong nagpu-promote kami, kami na!” she recalled.
On September 1984, the couple got married at the Manila Cathedral. Cuneta, who was already pregnant with her first child KC Concepcion during that time, also narrated some details about her wedding day.
“I was naglilihi na then. In the middle of the ceremony, I remember I was telling Gabby, ‘Pa, I really need to throw up,’ kasi sukang-suka na ako. The monsignor did, binilisan na lang.”
She further recalled: “Nasira yung altar kasi binuksan. My veil, nanakaw.
“Ginamit ko na lang sa reception, yung belo ng secondary sponsor, yung nilalagay sa ‘yo.
“‘Tapos, sumabog yung tambutso ng bridal car, ‘tapos pagdating sa hotel, may metro aide na, lahat na, binisita ko na silang lahat.”
However, their marriage did not last long and Cuneta and Concepcion separated in 1986.
In 1990, they reunited for a project and starred on a movie together titled “Bakit Ikaw Pa Rin?”
Remembering some memories on doing the film, the Megastar said, “That movie Bakit Ikaw Pa Rin?, from beginning to end, hindi kami nag-uusap.
“I have very bad memories of that whole movie. Pati yung nagre-rehearse kayo ng linya, pag take na, iba na.
“And then we couldn’t tell people na hindi kami magkasundo. Pero maganda yung whole movie na lumabas.”
Fans were hopeful that because of the movie, Cuneta and Concepcion would get back together. Unfortunately, that was not the case.
“He met someone else and he chose her but that’s okay, I mean, that’s a long time ago.
“It has something to do also, I have issues, Korina, na people think they call you Mega, people think you have everything.”
“I’ve always felt I was never enough for any man since my first husband, so you know… I know how to channel lang my energies and every time I would come out lang on TV, I have a license to be happy.
“Alam mo kung puro puso noon, isip at puso naman ‘wag puro puso,” she told Korina Sanchez during the Rated K interview.
After “Bakit Ikaw Pa Rin?”, the couple once again made a movie together titled “Tayong Dalawa” in 1992.
“I was so happy there, e. I could be friends with the father of my daughter, that’s how I felt. That’s a very special movie,” Cuneta said.
Cuneta was then asked if fans can look forward to another movie starring her and her ex-husband, to which the Megastar replied, “Depende kay Gabby at sa Star Cinema.”
After the Rated K episode was aired, Cuneta took it to Instagram to explain why she became emotional as she recalled her past with Concepcion.
