The old Deira fish market used to be bustling with customers, traders, and tourists alike. The 60-year-old market might be fondly remembered by many, but it was recently closed down.
Here’s the catch. The closure of the old market has led to the birth of a new one. Take note, a state-of-the-art facility.
The Waterfront Market, the new fish market located on Al Khakeej Road, has opened its doors to the public.
The 100,000-square-meter facility boasts of a cleaner environment, equipped with air conditioning, which aims to infuse the traditional marketplace atmosphere with a modern touch to ensure the best experience for traders and customers alike.
The Waterfront Market, like the old market, commits to being the best place to buy fresh fish, fruits, vegetables, meat, as well as dry goods and spices. The new facility, which opened a week ago, is expected to serve about 500,000 visitors a month.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, personally visited the Waterfront Market and was pleased with the new state-of-the-art facility. Sheikh Mohammed also inspected taxi reception areas that will cater to tourists visiting the market.
The newly-opened market is under management of Waterfront Market and the Fishermen’s Association. While the management has no relation with the Dubai Municipality, authorities are ensure the implementation of the Municipality laws and hygiene rules.
